the main character theory

By

I’m a firm believer that every single person on this earth serves some sort of purpose for the highest good of humanity. Every. Single. One. But how our sense of purpose oftentimes gets lost is when we give the driver’s seat of our lives to other people, beliefs, circumstances, and fears.

It’s also mind-blowing to think of how interconnected we all are. Everyone in our lives is a reflection of some part of our being and is there to teach us some sort of lesson. Some people magnify our internal wounds so we can heal them. Some people are there to encourage us to reach our highest potential. Some people help us find our way back to ourselves. Some people will teach us those lessons for a long time, some for a short. It doesn’t come as a surprise how we can so easily lose sight of our own sovereignty because of all the external catalysts constantly influencing our emotional state.

Each word and action from the people we come across in our lives reflects something about ourselves. People’s actions themselves aren’t what makes us happy or hurt us, but rather the emotions we attach to them. How we choose to react can either perpetuate our collective pain or spur healing. Take Jake Gyllenhall for example. His actions towards Taylor Swift were judged by her and many people around the world as the opposite of how someone wants to be treated in a relationship. Although she felt pain, she chose to creatively transmute it by writing an album so other people who relate to that pain can feel like they’re not alone in their struggles. Each action, word, and thought we have had a domino effect on others and the direction of humanity whether we realize it or not.

However, we also play a different role than we may think in the lives of other people. One word we said could dampen someone’s day without intentionally doing so from the old insecurity it brought up within them. A smile we randomly flash at a stranger walking down the street could restore their faith back into humanity. As you could be a supporting actor in someone’s life, you could be playing the antagonist in another’s. You never know what exact weight your actions will have, but it’s certainly guaranteed that they will have some sort of effect on the grand scheme of things.

We are the main characters of our own lives quite literally. Every experience, person, or thing that comes to and from us is because of us. In the wise words of Oprah Winfrey, “Remember to fill your cup up and let it overflow to the others in your life.” Learning to take care of and prioritize yourself first will help restore vision to the unique purpose all of us have. Your purpose is important, and your existence is important.
